With over 178 million hectares of forests, the Congo Basin is the world’s second-largest contiguous rainforest. Despite such immense resource potential, it occupies a marginal place in the global wood value chain; over 80% of its timber is exported in logs or minimally processed form, with little to no secondary or tertiary wood processing. Advanced wood manufacturing has considerable potential for accelerating economic growth and development, as well as reducing poverty-driven tree thefts that exacerbate deforestation.
